Instead of raking leaves this fall, consider mulching them for a natural fertilizer that benefits your lawn. Mulching reduces weeds and decomposes by spring, making it an easy, efficient choice for your yard care.

In August, continue watering and fertilizing your lawn to support trees and shrubs. Use mulch to conserve moisture. You can plant pansies, beets, carrots, spinach, and other vegetables for transplanting by late September.

Aeration creates small holes in compacted soil, improving water, air, and nutrient flow to grass roots, especially when paired with fall fertilization and overseeding. It's particularly beneficial for heavily used yards or those established with sod, enhancing drainage and root development.

Brown patch disease creates brown and yellow spots on lawns in hot, humid conditions, mainly affecting tall fescue grasses. It's caused by the Rhizoctonia fungus, often due to over-fertilizing or overwatering. Prevent it by watering in the morning and aerating your lawn; if it occurs, use a fungicide.

To keep your summer gardens thriving, garden in the early morning or evening to avoid humidity. New plants need more water, and compost can provide essential nutrients. Planting colorful blooms in groups will attract bees and butterflies, with milkweed being a key food source for Monarchs.

Let’s talk about feeding your plants. During the late Spring/early Summer season your trees and shrubs are working very hard. Blooming new flowers, leaves and seeds is a big job. So they will need extra attention and care; plant food being a large part of this. It is especially important to fertilize when you notice your plant’s leaves to be pale or turning a yellow color. Also, feeding your new flowering trees and shrubs will encourage even more blooms next year! Aphids, Spring Cankerworm, Katydids, and Tent Caterpillar eggs. These are only some of the ornamental trees and shrubs biggest pests during this time of year. Pests such as these can ruin your favorite piece of plant life by feeding on them and extracting the necessary nutrients and sap causing your greenery to appear wilted and unhealthy. Around this time of year it is always wise to get your garden set up with some insecticides. Wait for the soil to dry before caring for your yard. Rake leaves, water with at least 1 inch per week, and mow once the grass is 2 inches tall. After a few mows, consider aeration to reduce compaction and enhance nutrient absorption.

March is a great time to test your soil’s nutrient levels and pH, which should be between 6 and 7.5 for optimal growth. If the pH is too high, use sulfur or organic mulch; if it's too low, add limestone or wood ash to enhance your yard's health.

As spring nears, prepare your lawn by applying pre-emergent herbicides in February to prevent weeds. Protect tender plants from frost, water them in winter, and avoid salt on icy surfaces, as it damages lawns; use sand or organic kitty litter instead.
